This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc. 6 months ago I purchased Paragon Software's extFS for Mac version 9; software which enables macOS to read and write the ext filesystem commonly used in Linux. I recently found out that the software refuses to install on Sierra and even though it is only 6 months old, that the company will offer no solution apart from to purchase as new, version 10. For the record, there are ways to hide what version of macOS you have, and I have spent a great amount of time doing this to trick the installer to installing. Version 9 works fine on Sierra.
The installer is simply coded to fail for every new macOS release so that you are forced to buy the new version. If I were to buy version 10, the exact same thing would happen when macOS 10.13 comes out and I'd be told to buy version 11. I urge you to not do business with these people. I hear Tuxera offer far better terms for similar software. EDIT: Some people are saying this only applies to their ExtFS program, not their NTFS one. Assuming that's the case, then I still suggest you avoid doing business with them, but this specific problem might only apply to the ext case.
I don't think the problem is paying for upgrades as a concept, but rather the behaviour: in a situation like what OP reported (being screwed by upgrade 6 months after purchase) the right thing to do was to provide a license for the new release as goodwill gesture, once prodded via support channels. It would have avoided the bad publicity, and now that the hack is out there, they risk losing actual upgrade sales - not only won't they see the $17 they wanted from OP, but they will likely not see several hundreds from others.
